Economist Alex de Vries, founder of Digiconomist, published a research, estimating the current total energy consumption for bitcoin mining and making a forecast for the future.

As of now,  BTC network consumes about 22 billion kWh per year, which is almost the annual electricity consumption in Ireland. The figure may tripple by the end of 2018, reaching the annual consumption in such countries like Czech Republic or Austria.

Due to Bitcoin Cash hard fork the block size increased from 8MB to 32MB. Also, several script operation codes (op-codes), which are machine language instructions that enable the performance of specific tasks, have been added or reactivated. A detailed post about use cases of op-codes is provided here.

MUFG Bank, a banking unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, the fifth largest in the world by total assets, plans to conduct a test of its own cryptocurrency MUFG Coin. The test will start in 2019 and is expected to involve around 100,000 MUFG Bank account holders who apply to participate.

The customers will be able to use MUFG Coin to make payments at shops and restaurants. If the testing phase is carried out smoothly, MUFG Bank will consider involving a wide range of businesses and service providers to use MUFG Coin in their business activities.
