MoonPay Europe has received its Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the Dutch Central Bank in the Netherlands.
Why this matters
- The EMI license opens up significant new ground for MoonPay in Europe:
- Custodial payment flows. MoonPay can offer payment accounts and related payment services to consumers and business customers.
- Stablecoin issuance. The license allows MoonPay to issue stablecoins, which enables MoonPay to enter the euro-denominated stablecoins market.
This also places MoonPay among a small group of Dutch-based companies that can issue open-loop stablecoins from the Netherlands, alongside Quantoz. It makes MoonPay the third Netherlands-based company to hold both a MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) authorization and an EMI license within a single entity. More notably, MoonPay is the first of these companies to combine both licenses in one entity while also holding open-loop stablecoin issuance capabilities, giving us broader options from the Netherlands than others in this category.
This is not MoonPay’s first regulatory milestone in Europe. MoonPay was also one of the first companies to obtain a MiCAR CASP license, back in 2024, giving us one of the longest track records of any stablecoin issuer operating under Europe’s regulatory framework.
