Opera browser is now offered with built-in crypto wallet

December 16, 2018 By Vitali Maldashou

A mobile version of Opera for Android now supports decentralised apps and ERC-20 tokens.

The latest browser for Android comes with a built-in Ethereum wallet and ERC-20 tokens. The browser also supports decentralised apps, like CryptoKitties.

“Until now using cryptocurrencies online and accessing Web 3 required special apps or extensions, making it difficult for people to even try it out. Our new browser removes that friction,” Charles Hamel, the product manager of Opera Crypto, said in a statement.

Web 3 is an umbrella term for a set of emerging technologies intersecting cryptocurrencies, blockchains and distributed systems that, together, extend the capabilities of the web we all use today in important and meaningful ways.

Hamel also explained the reason behind Ethereum support: “it has the largest community of developers building Dapps and has gathered a lot of momentum behind it”.

He pointed out that during the development phase, the firm had listened to customer feedback and updated the app’s user interface considerably. Setting up a wallet now is more seamless. Hamel said the company is trying to speed up cryptocurrency transition from speculations and investments to daily use.

In 2019, a similar upgrade will appear in Opera berowser for Windows, Mac and Linux; the beta version is already available for developers. Yet, iOS wallet is not expected any time soon, owing to Apple’s strict apps requirements, said Hamel.
