Brazilian food retailer now accepts crypto payments

December 26, 2018 By Vitali Maldashou

Customers of food retailer Oásis Supermercados in Rio-de-Janeiro can now pay with cryptocurrencies.

Oásis Supermercados, Brazilian food retailer with annual turnover of about $6 million, has started to accept cryptocurrency from its customers as payment option. Douglas Andrade, one of the managers, said customers can now pay in one of three cryptocurrencies – bitcoin, bitcoin cash and litecoin.

“[It is] too easy. It is the same as the payment by [any] credit card. The client says which cryptocurrency he wants to pay [with], the operator types in the amount to be paid in reals, and the system already converts to that crypto. Then just get the QR code and you’re done,” said Andrade.

The supermarket has partnered with CoinWISE that will be providing the crypto payment gateway. The exchange sends fiat back to retailer three days later after it receives cryptocurrency payment via gateway.

Brazil doesn’t have a digital-assets ban, hence more local companies throw their support behind crypto implementation. Technisa’s clients, for example, a construction firm, can get a 5% discount when using bitcoin. Bitcoin cash and litecoin are accepted by transport operators, Brasil Sul and Viação Garcia, as well as a metro service provider, Metrô Brasília.

Last December, another promising startup, Dash, announced partnership with Brazilian platform CoinBR. The announcement led to 13,000 stores welcoming the altcoin as payment means.
