Wanchain, a pioneer in decentralised blockchain interoperability, with support from Midnight, has revealed plans for a new decentralised cross-chain bridge linking the Cardano and Midnight mainnets. Midnight, Cardano’s first partner chain, is a new data protection Layer-1 (L1) blockchain.
The planned bridge will employ a novel Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP) relay mechanism, enabling users to seamlessly transfer digital assets between the Cardano and Midnight networks, such ADA (Cardano’s native cryptocurrency) and NIGHT (one of Midnight’s two tokens). By leveraging ZKP technology, the bridge will ensure the enhanced privacy and security that is crucial for Midnight’s data privacy-focused ecosystem.
Empowering the Cardano Community: Voting for the Bridge
A proposal aiming to initiate the development of the new ZKP-based bridge mechanism has been submitted by Wanchain to Cardano’s Catalyst platform.
Community members can cast their votes using ADA through the catalyst platform, making it a fully transparent and democratic process. Voting is now open and will run until 12th December.
The proposal’s primary goal is to secure funding to develop the new ZK mechanism and provide Cardano users with Midnight’s unique privacy-preserving features. If successful, the initiative will lead to a robust framework for cross-chain transactions that respects Midnight’s features without compromising on functionality or speed.
A Focus on Privacy: Midnight’s Role in the Bridge
Midnight is Cardano’s first partner chain, although it operates with a separate consensus and ledger. As such, it lacks native capabilities to send and receive assets to and from the Cardano mainnet. The project will fill that gap by providing secure and transparent transactions between the two networks. The Midnight testnet is already live and a full mainnet launch is expected in early 2025, positioning the project as a timely and essential development for the ecosystem.
