Coinbase announces the extension of its partnership with the football club Borussia Dortmund (BVB) – the ‘23/‘24 runner-up of the Champions League. Coinbase has been a partner of the club since August 2022, but mostly used the brand and the media of the BVB in Germany. Now their partnership has expanded geographically to cover Europe and Singapore, reflecting the club’s ever-growing global status.
“Coinbase has a growing team in Germany, and we were the first crypto platform licensed by the German financial regulator. The extension of our partnership once again demonstrates Coinbase’s long-term commitment to Germany’s most respected football team. We are thrilled to expand our partnership beyond Germany to reach BVB fans in other markets.,” says Jan Sell, Managing Director of Coinbase Germany.
Last season, Coinbase reached over 30 million BVB fans through its sponsorship. In addition to the highly visible perimeter advertising and cam carpets inside the stadium, BVB players like Emre Can, Marco Reus, and Felix Nmecha shared educational video messages about crypto on BVB’s Instagram channel.
This partnership is key to Coinbase’s goal of introducing the advantages of web3 and the decentralised web to more than 1 billion people. This season, Coinbase and BVB will go to market in a number of new ways. For example, Coinbase’s presence in the iconic SIGNAL IDUNA PARK will increase – as the presenter of all home game substitutions and in-stadium perimeter displays will be shown to match viewers across all of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Together, both companies will partner to produce fan events, co-branded advertising and custom social content on BVB’s social channels. They will also continue to collaborate on easy-to-use blockchain-based activations for fans, demonstrating the utility of crypto. Additionally, Coinbase will leverage the BVB brand through its own marketing channels, including its website, social media, and email marketing.
As before, Coinbase will continue to bring BVB fans closer to their favourite team by offering exclusive VIP tickets for top games, such as those against Bayern, Leverkusen, and Stuttgart, as well as autographed jerseys in various sweepstakes.
“The brand partnership between Coinbase and BVB started as a small test balloon and is now entering its second extension. With each new step, we have deepened and expanded our collaboration: additional regions, additional advertising materials, and a longer time horizon. We are proud to count on the world’s most trusted crypto platform as a long-term, highly committed partner for BVB” says Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund.
“We are truly excited that Coinbase will continue its partnership with BVB for the next years. The partnership will allow them to offer fans unique experiences and bring them closer to the world of crypto. Borussia Dortmund provides Coinbase with the perfect platform to activate the partnership in an eye-catching way around the world – while the brand continues to be a trusted and established partner for the club,” says Thomas Joos, SPORTFIVE’s Executive Director at Team BVB.
Outside the partnership with the BVB, Coinbase sponsors the National Basketball Association (NBA) in a multiyear partnership. The company is also the exclusive cryptocurrency platform partner of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), NBA G League, NBA 2K League and USA Basketball.
