Decentraland Cross-Chain Upgrade Improves Accessibility
Decentraland’s latest upgrade is a huge step towards making the Metaverse more accessible. Using Squid to implement its upgrade, Decentraland content creators and players will be able to use Polygon and Ethereum in the game’s marketplace.
Squid is a cross-chain liquidity layer created by Axelar, and will simplify the shopping experience throughout Decentraland. Instead of needing to use Decentraland’s native currency, $MANA, players will be automatically rerouted to Polygon and Ethereum if they don’t hold any $MANA.
In theory, this will make Decentraland more accessible, though not all crypto experts believe the upgrade will be a success. According to DappRadar, the number of players on Decentraland dropped from 27,466 to 20,232 between October and December 2023, a 25% decline. With this in mind, Decentraland will need to rebuild its audience at an extremely fast rate for its latest upgrade to succeed.
Since the announcement, Decentraland’s $MANA has increased in value by over 5%, and tokens are now trading at $0.5112.
