DFINITY Foundation, the creator and major contributor to the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), announced the integration of Solana with ICP. This significant development advances ICP’s Chain Fusion Technology, which underpins cross-chain interoperability by enabling ICP to connect directly with many of the world’s widely used blockchains.
This announcement follows highly successful integrations with Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), which empowered and enabled milestone Bitcoin DeFi projects such as Odin.Fun, Liquidium, and Omnity, for example–all of which set new standards for speed, security, functionality, and UX. The integration of Solana (SOL) now means that canister smart contracts on ICP can interact with all three of these major DeFi focused blockchains, all while maintaining seamless performance and security.
Chain Fusion technology enables smart contracts on ICP to interconnect with multiple blockchains in a decentralized manner, eliminating the need for a single trusted intermediary such as a bridge. Chain Fusion allows ICP developers to create multichain applications without needing to migrate their contracts or Decentralized Apps (dApps) onto ICP. By leveraging ICP’s distinctive capabilities – such as chain-key signing, on-chain computation, and HTTPS outcalls – developers can extend and enhance their crypto applications while maintaining secure, efficient, and seamless interoperability.
For ICP developers, this integration means access to Solana’s blockchain, enabling transactions, queries, and smart contract interactions. At the same time, Solana developers gain the ability to use ICP as an on-chain co-processor, eliminating off-chain dependencies and boosting both efficiency and decentralization across networks.
“By bridging the gap between Solana and ICP through Chain Fusion, we are granting developers with powerful new tools to build next-generation dApps that unify speed, security, and decentralization in one seamless experience, essentially dissolving the barriers that limit blockchain innovation. It’s a glimpse of the internet’s future: open, interoperable, and truly owned by its users.” said Jan Camenisch, Chief Technology Officer at DFINITY.
This integration marks another step towards the DFINITY Foundation’s ongoing commitment to fostering a decentralized internet ecosystem. By enabling cross-chain functionality without compromising Web3 principles of decentralization, the Foundation aims to expand possibilities for developers and end users alike. The combined capabilities of ICP and Solana provide a robust framework for accelerated innovation in Web3, decentralized finance, gaming, and other blockchain-driven industries.
